AI-written content for your website: what is fine, and what backfires

By Shivam Brahmbhatt · · 2 min read

Whether AI helped write a page matters less than whether the page is useful, accurate and written for people.

What is fine

  • Using AI to outline, draft, edit or summarize, followed by real human review.
  • Adding your own expertise, examples and facts so the page says something worth reading.
  • Updating old pages so they stay accurate.

Google has said it focuses on the quality of content rather than how it was produced. Always fact-check output; see AI hallucinations.

What backfires

  • Publishing large volumes of generic pages to chase search terms.
  • Pages with no original information or checking.
  • Invented facts, quotes, statistics or reviews.
  • Near-duplicate pages that differ only by a city or keyword.

Google's spam policies cover scaled content abuse: using AI to mass-produce pages without adding value, however they are produced. Near-duplicate pages that differ only by a city or keyword can fall under its doorway-page rules.

A quality checklist

  • Does it answer a real question clearly?
  • Is every fact true and checkable?
  • Does it include something only you could say?
  • Would you be comfortable if a customer read it?
  • Is it kept current?

For AEO

Assistants quote clear, accurate, specific answers. Thin generic content gives them nothing distinctive to cite. See how to write FAQs that get quoted and SEO vs AEO.

Our approach

AI helps with first drafts. A person checks every claim, and nothing is invented. See good vs bad AI practices.

Using AI on your own service pages and job descriptions

  • Give the tool your real facts: services, area, process, what you do and do not do.
  • Ask for a draft, then rewrite anything that does not sound like you.
  • Check every number, claim and credential against what is true.
  • Keep one page per real topic, not one per city.
  • Add something only you can say: how you work, a real example, a plain answer to a common question.

Common questions

Will Google penalise AI content?

Low-quality, manipulative content can be demoted whether or not AI wrote it. Helpful content is judged on quality.

Should I label AI-assisted content?

Be honest where a reader would reasonably expect to know. Follow guidance for your industry.

Does Google rank AI-written pages lower?

Google has said it looks at helpfulness and quality rather than how a page was produced. Mass-produced pages written mainly to manipulate rankings are the risk. Check current Google guidance.
