AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants, voice assistants and search answer boxes to find, understand and quote correctly. Ask an assistant for a plumber and it names a few and skips the rest. If you are skipped, or it gets your service area wrong, you never hear about the job you lost.

What does AEO mean?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An "answer engine" is anything that answers a question directly instead of listing links. That includes AI chat assistants, AI summaries at the top of search results, voice assistants and featured snippets. AEO is the set of habits that make your website, listings and facts easy for those systems to read, understand and repeat correctly.
AEO is not a trick. It cannot force an assistant to recommend you, because nobody controls what an AI says. You control whether your information is easy to find, consistent and clear.
A quick example
A customer asks an assistant, "Who can fix a leaking water heater near me?" It does not show ten links. It names a few businesses, often citing a website or listing. AEO is the work that decides whether your business is named, whether its details are right, and whether the source is yours.
Why it matters for a small business
A customer who asks "who fixes a leaking water heater near me" or "what does an AI automation consultant cost" may never open ten websites. They read one answer. If the assistant cannot find your business, misreads your service area or quotes an old price, you lose the lead without ever knowing it happened.
This hits local and service businesses hardest. A short list of names is often all the customer sees.
The building blocks of AEO
- Crawler access. If your site blocks AI crawlers by accident, assistants cannot read it. See how to configure robots.txt for AI crawlers.
- Readable pages. Content that needs JavaScript to appear is invisible to many crawlers. Plain HTML wins.
- Clear, consistent facts. Name, services, service area, hours and contact details stated the same way everywhere.
- Structured data. Markup that labels those facts for machines. See schema markup for small businesses.
- Direct answers. Pages and FAQs that answer real customer questions in plain language. See how to write FAQs that get quoted.
- Off-site presence. A verified Google Business Profile, directory listings and a consistent name across the web. See Google Business Profile and AI answers.
What AEO is not
- It is not hidden text, keyword stuffing or fake reviews. Those get sites penalized.
- It is not instructions planted in your pages for AI systems to obey. That is manipulation that can undermine trust and may break search engines' spam policies.
- It is not a guarantee of ranking or recommendation. Anyone who promises one is selling something that cannot be delivered.
How do you start with AEO?
Search your own business name and your core service in a few assistants and in Google. Write down what comes back. Is the business named correctly? Is the service area right? Is anything out of date? That list is your first AEO to-do list. Repeat it every month so you can see direction over time. See how to measure your AI visibility.
Where do answer engines get their answers?
It helps to know the two sources behind most AI answers. One is what a model absorbed during training, which has a cut-off date and cannot reflect last week's price change. The other is live lookup: many assistants and AI search features can fetch web pages, listings and directories while they answer, then summarize what they find. Our post on how AI assistants find and choose sources goes through both in more detail.
Nobody outside the AI companies knows the exact selection rules, and those rules change. What we can say is that an assistant can only quote what it can reach and read. A page that blocks crawlers, hides its facts inside images or contradicts your own listings gives it little to work with. That is why AEO is mostly unglamorous housekeeping rather than cleverness.
How AEO relates to SEO, GEO and LLMO
You will see several labels for overlapping work. SEO is the older discipline of earning a place in a list of search results. AEO, GEO and LLMO are newer labels for making your business easy for AI systems to find and quote. The labels differ far more than the tasks do, and we untangle them in AEO vs GEO vs LLMO.
If you already do sound SEO, you have a head start, because both reward a fast, crawlable site and real expertise. The extra AEO layer is machine-readable facts, crawler permissions and pages written so an answer can be lifted cleanly. We compare the two side by side in SEO vs AEO.
An AEO checklist for a small business
Work through this list in order. Most items take an hour or less, and none requires you to guess what an AI will do.
- Write down your core facts. Business name exactly as you want it shown, services, service area, hours, phone number, address if customers visit, and what you do not do. Keep one copy as the source of truth.
- Check that crawlers are allowed in. Open your robots.txt and make sure you are not blocking the crawlers you want. Our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers explains the common ones.
- Make pages readable as plain HTML. If key text only appears after scripts run, some crawlers will miss it. View your page with scripts off to check.
- Put the answer first. Open each service page with a one or two sentence plain description of what you do, for whom and where, then add detail below.
- Add structured data. Label your organization, services and FAQs so machines do not have to guess. See schema markup for small business.
- Publish real FAQs. Answer the questions customers actually ask, in the words they use. See how to write FAQs that get quoted.
- Claim and complete your listings. A verified, fully filled Google Business Profile is one of the most useful sources for a local business. See Google Business Profile and AI answers.
- Consider an llms.txt file. It is a proposed plain-text summary of your site for language models. Whether a given assistant reads it varies, so treat it as a cheap extra rather than a fix. See what is llms.txt.
- Keep reviews and replies current. Recent, genuine reviews and sensible replies show who you are. See automated review requests done right.
A worked example (hypothetical)
This is an imagined business, used only to show the process. Say a small heating and air company serves three towns near Jacksonville. A customer asks an assistant, "Who does same-week AC repair in my town?"
The owner tests the question in a few assistants and in Google and writes down what comes back. Three problems turn up. The business appears, but with a phone number from an old directory listing. One of its three towns is missing from the answer. And the service page says "we serve the greater area" without naming any town.
The fixes are ordinary. The owner updates the old listing, names all three towns on the service page, adds a short FAQ ("Do you repair AC units the same week?" with a truthful answer about scheduling), adds structured data that matches those facts, and confirms the Google Business Profile lists the same towns and hours. None of this guarantees a recommendation. It removes the obvious reasons an assistant would get the details wrong, and the owner repeats the same test next month to see whether anything moved.
Common AEO mistakes
- Blocking crawlers by accident. A blanket rule copied from a template can shut out every crawler, including ones you want.
- Inconsistent facts. A different phone number, name spelling or service area on each site gives a summarizer a contradiction to resolve, and it may resolve it wrongly.
- Vague pages. "We offer quality service" says nothing to quote. Name the service, the place and the customer.
- Marking up things that are not on the page. Structured data should describe what visitors can actually see. Anything else risks being ignored or treated as spam.
- Mass-produced AI text. Thin, generic pages do not make you more useful to anyone. See what is fine and what backfires with AI content.
- Chasing guarantees. Anyone promising placement in AI answers cannot deliver it. See good vs bad AI practices.
- Set and forget. Hours change, services change, platforms change. Stale facts are the most common cause of a wrong answer.
How long does AEO take, and how do you know it is working?
The fixes themselves are often quick: an afternoon for facts and listings, a few days for structured data and a handful of good pages. The effect is slower and less predictable, because crawlers revisit sites on their own schedule and assistants change over time. Expect weeks to months, and treat any firm timeline with suspicion.
Measure direction rather than a single number. Ask the same set of questions in the same assistants each month, record who is named and whether the details are right, and compare. Our post on how to measure your AI visibility shows a simple way to do that without buying a score.
What to do this week
- Run the test in the "How do you start" section above and save the results.
- Write your core facts on one page and fix the most obvious mismatch in your listings.
- Open your robots.txt and confirm nothing is blocked by accident.
- Rewrite the opening of your main service page so it states what you do, for whom and where.
- Draft five real customer questions and answer them truthfully.
If you would rather hand this over, we can take the checklist and do the work with you. Reach out through the contact page, or text or call (904) 293-3040. No pressure, and no promises about where an AI will point people.
Common questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap heavily. SEO aims at ranking in a list of links; AEO aims at being read and quoted correctly in a direct answer. Read SEO vs AEO for the differences.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
Not in organic AI answers. You can make your information easier to read and more consistent, but nobody can buy or guarantee placement. Be wary of anyone who says they can.
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: making your business easy for AI assistants, voice assistants and search answer boxes to find, read and quote correctly.
How is AEO different from GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimization) is another name for much the same work. See AEO vs GEO vs LLMO.
How long does AEO take to work?
The fixes can be done in days, but the effect is gradual and depends on how often crawlers revisit your site. Think weeks to months, and measure direction with a monthly check instead of expecting a switch to flip.
Do I need structured data for AEO?
It is not strictly required, but it labels your facts for machines and removes guesswork. Make sure the markup matches what visitors see on the page. See schema markup for small business.
Should I add an llms.txt file?
It is a low-cost extra, but support varies and it is not a substitute for readable pages and consistent facts. See what is llms.txt.
Can I do AEO myself?
Yes. The checklist above is mostly housekeeping: consistent facts, readable pages, allowed crawlers, honest FAQs and a complete Google Business Profile. Help is useful if you lack the time or want the technical pieces handled for you.
